Crypto platform review / United States

Coinbase is the custodian. It is not the asset's guarantee.

Coinbase, Inc. provides the reviewed US retail account, hosted wallets and exchange services. USD cash, supported digital assets, staked assets, card spending, a Coinbase One membership, securities and self-custody each use different rules and sometimes different entities. The useful question is not whether the blue app is safe in the abstract. It is who holds what, under which contract, while a particular action is pending.

Direct answer

Coinbase fits users who want regulated-platform access and can manage crypto-specific risk.

The clearest fit is a US adult who wants one custodial account for supported purchases, sales, transfers and selected staking, and who is prepared to inspect every confirmation. Simple Coinbase favors ease: the quote includes applicable fee and spread. Coinbase Advanced favors order control: it uses the order book and an authenticated maker-taker tier. Neither interface removes price volatility, asset support, network, tax, account or transfer risk.

The most important boundary is protection. Coinbase is not an FDIC-insured bank. Digital assets are not protected by FDIC, NCUSIF or SIPC. A corporate crime policy covers only a portion of specified platform losses and does not turn a stolen customer credential into an insured balance. Eligible USD cash can receive conditional pass-through treatment when it is actually held at an insured financial institution and all recordkeeping and ownership requirements are satisfied. Coinbase may instead place cash in permissible liquid investments, so no universal bank or coverage result should be inferred.

Best evidenced fit

  • Beginners who will read the complete simple-trade preview before confirming.
  • Active traders who understand order books, maker-taker tiers and partial fills.
  • Customers using eligible USD rails who can tolerate security holds.
  • Stakers who accept network timing, commission and slashing conditions.

Avoid or recheck if

  • You need a bank deposit directly issued by Coinbase.
  • You require guaranteed principal, yield, access time or dispute recovery.
  • You cannot safely manage networks, addresses or recovery material.
  • You need one published fee percentage for every trade or funding route.

Interactive US review lens

Choose the activity before judging Coinbase.

First purchase / conditional verdict

A relatively legible custodial starting point when the customer reads the final quote, uses a supported payment method and accepts platform custody and transfer holds.

Evidence-backed fit
  • Simple trading presents a fixed quote with applicable fee and spread before confirmation.
  • US payment methods can include ACH, debit card, wire and PayPal for different actions.
  • The hosted account keeps keys and account recovery inside Coinbase's custodial system.
Boundary

The preview, payment method, asset, account history, state, hold, limit and verification state control. A simple interface does not make the asset insured or the quoted spread free.

Entity and product map

One login can cross eight separate legal or operational systems.

The governing product, asset and entity control. A Coinbase brand relationship does not merge cash, crypto, card, securities, derivatives or self-custody protection.

Retail exchange

Coinbase, Inc.

The individual US User Agreement is with Coinbase, Inc. It provides the hosted account, custodial digital-asset wallets, USD wallet and listed exchange services. State money transmission and virtual-currency permissions do not make it a bank.

USD cash

FBO custody or permissible investments

Coinbase says customer USD is held one-to-one and separate from corporate money. It can sit in pooled FBO accounts at banks or credit unions or in short-duration Treasuries and government money-market funds. The current placement is not visible from a generic help page.

Hosted crypto

Platform-managed keys

In a primary Coinbase balance, Coinbase safeguards the private keys. The customer acts through account credentials, security controls and platform instructions. Asset and network support can change and a hosted balance is not a bank deposit.

Card programme

Pathward, Visa and Marqeta

Pathward, N.A. issues the US debit card under a Visa licence and Marqeta powers the programme. Coinbase controls supported funding and optional rewards. Spending crypto triggers a sale into USD rather than sending a token through the Visa network.

Separate securities

CCM and Apex

The observed insurance disclosure identifies Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation and Apex Clearing Corporation for eligible equities accounts. SIPC is limited brokerage protection, not investment-performance insurance, and ends for settled cash swept back to the Coinbase, Inc. USD balance.

Institutional custody

Coinbase Custody Trust Company

The New York limited-purpose trust company has a separate institutional custody and complaint role. Its charter must not be pasted onto an ordinary Coinbase, Inc. retail account or described as a general Coinbase bank licence.

Derivatives

Separately registered product

Coinbase's licence page identifies a separate designated-contract-market entity. This review does not infer futures access, margin, collateral treatment or suitability from spot-account eligibility. The live product agreement controls.

Self-custody

User-controlled keys

Coinbase's self-custody experience moves control to the user. Whoever has the recovery material can control the wallet; Coinbase cannot restore a lost phrase or reliably undo a malicious contract, wrong network or irreversible on-chain transfer.

Open Coinbase entity and custody sources

Cost model

The price depends on the screen, order and funding path.

There is no approved universal Coinbase fee. The order preview, authenticated tier, payment rail and network state are part of the price record.

ActionPublished pricing ruleWhat remains conditional
Simple buy, sell or convertFixed preview quote includes applicable fee and spread.Asset, size, liquidity, payment method, market and final confirmation.
Coinbase AdvancedMaker-taker fee based on the current rolling thirty-day volume tier; no included spread.Authenticated fee table, order behavior, partial fills, execution and tier updates.
On-chain sendNetwork and Coinbase-disclosed charges appear before confirmation.Asset, network congestion, destination, minimum, memo, review and irreversibility.
Coinbase Card spendNo Coinbase transaction fee; crypto spending includes a sale and spread.Operator fees, taxes, supported balance, limit, merchant and card agreement.
StakingNetwork rewards credited after Coinbase commission; instant unstaking can carry a fee.Reward rate, eligibility, protocol timing, slashing, availability and live quote.
Coinbase OneTiered simple-trade fee benefit with volume limits; spread remains.Membership price, renewal, geography, eligibility, tier, exclusions and benefit changes.

A fee-free label is therefore incomplete. Coinbase One can remove an eligible simple-trade fee up to the live tier allowance, but it does not remove spread and excludes Advanced, DEX services and derivatives from that benefit. Advanced can avoid the simple-product spread, but it adds a maker-taker fee and execution responsibility. Card spending can show no Coinbase transaction fee while a crypto-funded purchase still requires a taxable asset sale at a quoted spread. Comparing only one line item can reverse the real result.

Cash and protection

Eligible USD cash may receive pass-through treatment. Crypto does not.

Coinbase says US customer cash is maintained in pooled custodial accounts at insured banks or credit unions or in permissible liquid investments. Pass-through insurance may apply only to the cash actually held at an insured institution, only if Coinbase's records and customer information satisfy the applicable requirements, and only after the relevant receiver makes its determination when that institution fails. Coinbase itself is not the insured bank or credit union.

Same-institution aggregation matters. If Coinbase allocates part of a customer's cash to a bank where that customer separately holds deposits in the same ownership category, the balances are combined for the applicable limit. The public institution list observed by this review is marked “as of May 2025,” so it is stale. It names JPMorgan Chase, Cross River Bank, Customers Bank, VyStar Credit Union and Pathward for cited Coinbase Inc or Prime placements, but it neither proves today's list nor identifies a particular customer's current allocation.

Trading choice

Simple, Advanced and One solve different problems.

Ease, order control and subscription benefits should be evaluated separately.

Simple Coinbase

Preview-led convenience

The customer chooses an asset and amount, then sees a locked quote containing applicable fee and spread. This is easier to parse than an order book, but the spread is real price friction. The final preview—not a remembered example—should be saved before confirmation.

Coinbase Advanced

Execution-led control

The customer interacts with order-book liquidity and can use limit, stop and other supported orders. Maker or taker status follows execution behavior, not the button's marketing label. A partially matched order can pay both treatments. Current fees require sign-in and the tier updates hourly.

Coinbase One

Subscription-led benefits

The observed page describes Basic, Preferred and Premium memberships. Simple-trade benefits are capped by tier or unlimited, yet spread remains. Advanced fees, DEX fees and derivatives are excluded. Reward boosts, support and protection benefits are conditional and can change.

Funding and cash-out

Portfolio value is not available bank cash.

A Coinbase screen can show total portfolio value, tradable balance, USD cash and available balance at the same time. These are not synonyms. Crypto must ordinarily be sold to the selected cash balance before it can be withdrawn to a bank. A completed sale can credit cash immediately while the proceeds remain subject to an existing hold. Only the amount shown as available can leave through an eligible cash-out destination.

US funding documentation lists ACH, debit card, wire and PayPal for different actions and timing. A method that supports buying does not necessarily support adding cash, cashing out or sending crypto. Names must match, third-party rules can apply and Coinbase can delay transferability based on account and transaction history. Support says it cannot simply shorten the displayed hold. The customer should use the live availability date rather than a generic settlement promise.

Bank linkedConnection exists; no payment has been approved.
Purchase completeAsset credited; external transfer can still be held.
Sale completeCash balance credited; bank withdrawal has not occurred.
Available balanceAmount presently eligible for transfer or cash-out.
Cash-out pendingCoinbase initiated; bank arrival and review remain open.
Bank creditedReceiving institution posts the final cash entry.

Staking

A displayed reward estimate is not an accessible cash yield.

Ownership, lock state, network mechanics, commission and market value all remain material.

Delegated validation

Coinbase or an affiliate facilitates validation for eligible assets after the customer instructs it to stake. The asset remains a volatile digital asset; staking does not turn it into a deposit, security guarantee or fixed-interest account.

Liquidity delay

A staked balance cannot be sold or sent until unstaking completes. Standard unstaking can take hours or weeks and Ethereum timing depends on network conditions. Paid instant unstaking can be unavailable and its live fee must be reviewed.

Rewards after commission

Rewards originate from the protocol. Coinbase cannot guarantee any reward and credits what it receives after commission. Estimated rates, historical payouts and Coinbase One boosts do not guarantee future token quantity or USD value.

Slashing boundary

Coinbase describes reimbursement for some Coinbase or validator mistakes, with exclusions for protocol bugs, hacks, customer conduct, outside providers and events beyond its control. Principal loss remains possible under the governing agreement.

Debit card

The card spends USD, even when the selected balance is crypto.

The US Coinbase Card is a Pathward-issued Visa debit card powered by Marqeta and was listed as unavailable in Hawaii when observed. Coinbase says supported USD, USDC or crypto can be selected for spending without a Coinbase transaction fee. If crypto funds the transaction, Coinbase automatically sells it into USD. That conversion can include spread and can create a taxable disposal. A card purchase is not an on-chain transfer to the merchant.

Coinbase lists no Coinbase ATM withdrawal fee, but the ATM owner can charge one. Spend and withdrawal limits apply, merchant acceptance is not universal and the card agreement can contain additional terms. Optional crypto rewards are variable, eligibility-specific and supplied by Coinbase rather than Pathward. None of those benefits should be described as a bank deposit return.

Custody choice

Account recovery and key control trade places.

In the hosted Coinbase account, the platform safeguards keys and the customer uses login, identity and recovery controls. Coinbase can restrict the account, hold transferability or require additional review. That dependence is a custody and operational risk, but ordinary password recovery does not require the user to preserve a seed phrase.

In self-custody, the user controls private keys or recovery material. This enables direct interaction with on-chain protocols and reduces dependence on a hosted withdrawal approval, but the loss model changes. A stolen phrase gives an attacker control. A lost phrase can make recovery impossible. Coinbase cannot reverse a valid blockchain transaction merely because the destination or contract was malicious.

Hosted CoinbasePlatform manages keys

Account recovery may be possible; platform holds, restrictions and service availability apply.

Self-custodyUser manages keys

Direct control is possible; recovery phrase, network, contract and irreversible-loss risk shift to the user.

Limits, support and restrictions

A support channel does not create transfer availability.

Account state, payment history, verification, law, security review and asset mechanics can produce different answers.

Conditional

Products, methods and assets vary by location, identity, history and live eligibility.

Unavailable

The public Advanced fee table does not expose a complete current percentage without sign-in.

Stale

The named cash-placement institution list is marked May 2025 and cannot prove today's allocation.

Held

Trading access can exist while transfer or cash-out availability remains delayed.

Restricted

Buying, selling, sending or storage can be limited independently for security, legal or compliance reasons.

Untested

NeobankDB did not open an account or test orders, support, card, staking, cash or recovery.

Changing

Fees, assets, reward rates, partners, limits and membership benefits can change after observation.

Conflicting

The app, account notice and governing agreement control when generic help text differs from live state.

Coinbase publishes support and complaint paths, and some state disclosures identify an escalation regulator. Those channels are useful evidence of process, not quality. A support representative may explain a restriction or request documents but cannot guarantee market value while access is delayed, accelerate every hold or recover an irreversible blockchain transfer. Customers should preserve the order preview, transaction hash, cash-out status, bank trace, device-security events and case number, then identify whether the issue concerns Coinbase, a bank, the card issuer, a blockchain network or a self-custody transaction.

Score state / intentionally empty

No overall safety or exchange score publishes.

Entity records and official disclosures cannot substitute for measured execution, spread, uptime, fraud, account-access, dispute, support, staking, custody and recovery outcomes. One number would collapse unlike risks and manufacture precision.

Complete source ledger

Sixteen approved records support this review.

Legal, cash-custody, protection, trading, payment, limit, staking, card, subscription, custody and FDIC records remain dated and product-scoped.
