Airwallex vs Wise Business: operations platform or focused money movement?

Both help US businesses receive, hold, convert and send money internationally. Wise Business is the more focused multicurrency and transfer product. Airwallex adds a broader stack for corporate cards, expenses, bills, merchant acceptance and multi-entity finance operations. Neither is a bank, and neither is automatically better for every company.

Direct answer

Choose Wise for the money route; choose Airwallex for the surrounding operation.

Wise Business is the clearer starting point when the primary need is receiving through named account details, converting at the mid-market rate with a disclosed route fee, or paying suppliers and contractors. Its US price structure begins with a USD 31 one-time setup or account-details fee, then separates sending, receiving, conversion and card costs. Batch payments, team permissions, approvals, cards and accounting connections make it more than a simple remittance tool, but the product remains centred on moving and managing money across currencies.

Airwallex is the stronger documented fit when international transfers sit inside a wider finance stack. Its current US plan matrix combines Global Accounts, corporate cards, expenses, reimbursements, bills, approvals, accounting integrations, card and local-method payment acceptance and platform capabilities. That breadth creates more configuration and more price surfaces. It also makes Airwallex the more relevant candidate for ecommerce, marketplaces, SaaS billing, multi-entity finance or a team replacing several point tools.

This is not a claim that Airwallex always has more useful features or Wise is always cheaper. The current Airwallex pages conflict on the Grow plan presentation, and Wise fees change by route and currency. A fair decision uses a real month of invoices, payouts, conversions, cards and payment acceptance—not a single marketing rate.

Start with Airwallex when

  • Cards, expenses, reimbursements and bill approvals are one workflow.
  • You accept customer payments as well as send supplier payouts.
  • Multiple entities, ERPs or platform integrations matter.
  • A broader finance-operations stack justifies plan and implementation work.

Start with Wise Business when

  • The core job is international receiving, conversion and transfers.
  • You want route-level quotes and a simple one-time setup entry point.
  • A freelancer or small team needs cards, batches and approvals without a larger stack.
  • You can keep domestic banking, merchant acquiring and deep expenses elsewhere.

Conditional US verdict

Wise favours transparent route-first receiving; Airwallex favours a broader wallet, card and finance-operations stack.

Current approved US product records

This tool uses approved United States business records only. The UK, EEA, India, UAE and other Airwallex or Wise entities can have different eligibility, protection, pricing and products; no US row should be copied into another market.

Classification and legal structure

Both are non-bank platforms, but their operating emphasis differs.

A partner bank, card issuer or Program Bank does not turn either platform into a bank.

Airwallex

Airwallex US, LLC

Airwallex US, LLC identifies itself as a money-services and money-transmission business under the approved US records. The product combines global money management with cards, spend, payments and platform tooling. Airwallex itself is not an FDIC-insured bank.

Wise

Wise US Inc.

Wise US Inc. is the US regulated money-transmission entity in the approved record, with Community Federal Savings Bank involved in specified states or territories. Wise is not a bank, and ordinary balances are not treated as insured deposits.

Important boundary

Business account is a product label

Both companies use account language because customers can receive, hold and send money. The label does not create a demand-deposit account at Airwallex or Wise. Protection must follow the actual placement and programme, not the word “account.”

Price model

Airwallex prices a stack; Wise prices access and transactions.

A live quote still controls. These rows are dated public entry points, not a universal invoice.

Airwallex entry and conflict

The dedicated US pricing page lists Explore at USD 0 per user per month and Grow at USD 12 per active user per month plus a platform fee based on team size. A current official Airwallex account-review article still shows Grow at USD 99 per month. NeobankDB does not choose one total silently. A customer considering Grow should obtain the actual account quote and document which users and platform fee are included.

Wise entry and transaction price

Wise lists USD 31 once to unlock Business features or receiving details. Sending and conversion use route-specific fees, advertised from 0.57%, and the price is displayed before authorisation. Volume discounts apply after qualifying monthly conversion volume. “No subscription” therefore does not mean transfers, wires, cards or conversion are free.

Comparable monthly model

Build a model using the currencies received, conversion frequency, local versus SWIFT payouts, number of card users, ATM use, payment-acceptance volume and accounting tier. Airwallex may consolidate paid tools; Wise may avoid a recurring platform fee. The lower total depends on the real operating pattern.

Open current pricing sources

Receiving, FX and payouts

The cheapest provider can change from one invoice to the next.

Receive

Local details and supported currencies

Airwallex advertises Global Accounts that collect and hold 20+ currencies, with local details available in supported markets. Wise lists receiving details in 22 currencies after the setup fee. In both products, the detail is part of a payment service and does not prove a separately owned local bank account in every country.

Convert

Markup versus route fee

Airwallex publishes an interbank-rate markup of 0.5% for listed major currencies and 1.0% for others. Wise uses the mid-market rate and adds a conversion fee that changes by pair and method. Compare the same currencies, amount and timestamp; comparing only the percentage labels can still misstate the delivered amount.

Pay

Local network versus quoted route

Airwallex lists free local transfers to supported recipients across 120+ countries and USD 15–25 for named SWIFT charge types. Wise quotes each route and lists same-currency Wise-to-Wise business payments without a fee. Recipient-bank charges, funding method, timing and compliance review can still affect either route.

Scale

Batch and approval workflow

Both document batch functionality. Wise gives the clearer public limit: up to 1,000 payments from a CSV or XLSX file. Airwallex places international batches and multi-layer approvals in its plan matrix. A production test should verify file validation, duplicate handling, partial failures, approval release and reconciliation.

Cards and spend management

Wise supplies team cards; Airwallex builds a broader spend workflow around them.

Wise lists the first US business card without a subscription fee and additional team cards at USD 5 once. Owners can set team permissions, card controls and payment approvals. The card is a practical extension of the multicurrency balance: spend held currency, convert when needed and apply published ATM conditions. It suits a team that wants cards and separation of duties without adopting a full expense platform.

Airwallex documents virtual company and employee cards, eligible physical employee cards, shared card access, merchant/category and time-period limits, receipt capture, reimbursements, spend requests, bills and policy workflows. Explore includes core spend features and up to ten free Spend users in the current matrix; Grow adds paid active users and more conditional approvals and automation. The broader system can reduce tool sprawl, but only if the team will configure and operate it.

Simple team cardsWise is the leaner starting point.
Expense policyAirwallex has the broader approved workflow.
Multi-entity spendAirwallex is the stronger documented fit.
Cash accessWise publishes ATM fees; neither supplies branch banking.

Payment acceptance

Airwallex has the clearer gateway case; Wise remains a receiving product.

Airwallex payments

Airwallex publishes US pricing for domestic and international card acceptance, local payment methods, subscriptions and platform flows. It also advertises like-for-like settlement in supported currencies. That makes it the closer fit when the business must take customer checkout payments and route settlement into the same operations stack.

Wise receiving

Wise Business supports account details, invoices, payment links and card-funded receipt paths in supported cases. The approved comparison set does not establish the same broad merchant-acquiring and connected-account price matrix. Wise should not be labelled incapable; it should be evaluated as a different receiving model.

Decision test

If checkout conversion, local methods, recurring billing, disputes and settlement reporting are core, test Airwallex. If clients mainly pay bank details or invoices and the business then converts or pays out, test Wise. A merchant may still use a dedicated processor with either account.

Team, accounting and automation

Both automate payments; Airwallex reaches further into finance operations.

Wise Business

Wise supports team-member permissions, one- or two-person payment approvals, batch files, an API and accounting connections. Its QuickBooks page documents selected currency feeds, bill payment and reconciliation. This is a strong fit for automating transfer-heavy workflows without replacing every spend or merchant tool.

Airwallex

Airwallex combines payment APIs, transfer approvals, cards, expenses, bills, reimbursements and accounting feeds. Explore lists Xero and QuickBooks; higher tiers add NetSuite, Dynamics 365 Business Central and HRIS connections. Platform and multi-entity cases require scope and pricing beyond a self-serve account comparison.

What to test

Verify permissions after staff changes, approval thresholds, rejected and partial batch states, webhook retries, duplicate prevention, currency mapping, attachment retention, journal coding and month-end export. A feature-list check cannot prove a safe production workflow.

Customer funds and protection

Neither ordinary balance deserves a blanket “FDIC insured” badge.

Airwallex says Evolve Bank & Trust, Member FDIC, provides payment services to certain US-based customers and holds eligible funds in an omnibus account for customers’ benefit. The source says the arrangement is intended to preserve pass-through eligibility to the extent permitted by law. That wording is conditional: customer scope, placement, records, ownership category, aggregation and FDIC requirements all matter. Airwallex itself is not a bank.

Wise says Wise US Inc. keeps ordinary customer funds separate in cash at commercial banks and secure liquid assets. Ordinary balances without the interest feature are not FDIC insured. Eligible customers who opt into the interest feature can have eligible balances swept to a current Program Bank for conditional pass-through treatment, subject to the programme, aggregation and FDIC rules. Wise itself is not a bank.

This distinction matters during provider failure, bank failure and account access. Fund segregation and pass-through eligibility address particular risks; neither promises immediate access, prevents a compliance hold, covers every currency or replaces the company’s own treasury and concentration-risk policy.

Wise ordinary fundsSeparated cash and liquid assets; not FDIC insured.
Wise interest featureOptional conditional Program Bank pass-through treatment.
Both providersNon-banks; programme conditions and aggregation apply.
Open protection and FDIC sources

Eligibility and onboarding

A product fit is irrelevant if the exact entity cannot onboard the business.

Airwallex US

The approved guidance requests US formation and tax evidence, business activity, beneficial-owner or controller identity and supporting documents. Sole proprietors and higher-risk models can have separate requirements. Registration is an application, not a promise of approval or every product.

Wise Business US

Wise requests registration, tax, physical trading address, activity, controller and owners at or above the stated threshold. The US guidance excludes businesses from Nevada and specified territories due to licensing limitations. Industry and prohibited activity restrictions also apply.

Documents to prepare

Collect formation records, EIN or tax documentation, operating and trading addresses, ownership chart, controller authority, identity evidence, website and business model, expected currencies, counterparties and transaction volumes. Additional review can occur after opening.

Decision framework

Run a thirty-day operating sample before choosing.

  1. 01

    Confirm eligibility

Validate the US entity, business type, owners, state and prohibited-activity rules.

  2. 02

    Map real flows

List receipts, currencies, conversions, local payouts, SWIFT, cards, checkout and bills.

  3. 03

    Price the month

Use actual transaction sizes, routes, card users and plan conditions rather than one fee.

  4. 04

    Test controls

Exercise approvals, failed batches, card freezes, staff removal and accounting reconciliation.

  5. 05

    Review protection

Confirm where each currency sits, programme eligibility and concentration at named institutions.

  6. 06

    Keep a fallback

Retain domestic banking and a second payment path for payroll, taxes and continuity.

Advantages and limitations

The products overlap, but they do not solve the same complete problem.

Airwallex advantages

  • Broader cards, expenses, bills, merchant payments and platform stack.
  • Published local-payout and FX entry points.
  • Multi-entity and higher-tier ERP workflows.
  • Payment acceptance and like-for-like settlement in supported currencies.

Airwallex limitations

  • Current official US pages conflict on the Grow price presentation.
  • More configuration and product surfaces can increase operational work.
  • Partner-bank treatment is conditional and Airwallex is not a bank.
  • Advanced features, users and support can depend on plan or sales scope.

Wise advantages

  • Focused route-pricing model with mid-market exchange-rate framing.
  • Clear receiving, wire and team-card entry prices.
  • Batch payments, permissions, approvals, API and accounting connections.
  • Useful fit for freelancers and smaller transfer-heavy teams.

Wise limitations

  • Ordinary balances are not FDIC-insured bank deposits.
  • Fees still vary by currency, route, funding and card action.
  • US state/territory and business-activity restrictions apply.
  • The approved set does not show Airwallex-equivalent gateway and deep-expense breadth.

Testing and score state

No numerical winner without parallel operational testing.

NeobankDB verified public product, fee, entity and protection records. It did not open both accounts, run identical transfers, submit support tickets, test API failure recovery, compare live FX quotes, measure settlement time or reconcile a month of accounting data. App ratings and promotional speed claims would not substitute for that work.

Overall numerical scoreNot published

Evidence completeness is sufficient for conditional decisions, not a universal ranking.
