A foreign-currency wire is not a foreign-currency balance.

Wise and Revolut document personal holding. Airwallex and Payoneer document business collection and balance workflows. Mercury documents international wires from USD deposits, not held foreign currencies. Compare the exact job—hold, receive, convert, spend or send—then identify the legal entity and protection model at that stage.

Direct answer

Match the currency job before the provider.

Wise has the broadest evidenced personal holding and receiving combination in this set. Revolut documents separate personal balances for 25 currencies inside its Lead Bank prepaid programme. Airwallex is the clearest business Global Account and wallet route, while Payoneer focuses on eligible marketplace, freelancer and client receipts. Mercury remains useful as a USD business bank context with international conversion, but it is not evidenced here as a foreign-currency holding account.

Classification first

Holding, receiving, converting and sending are four separate capabilities.

A provider can support one without supporting the other three.

01

Held currency balance

A separate supported balance can remain in its currency until conversion, spending or transfer. It does not automatically include local bank details, interest, deposit insurance or every funding method.

02

Local receiving detail

A routing number, IBAN or other local detail can collect a specific currency through a named rail. It is not proof that the user owns a bank account at the displayed partner institution.

03

Transaction-time conversion

A card or wire can convert from an available balance at execution. That supports spending or sending, but it does not create a persistent foreign-currency balance before or after the transaction.

04

Bank or payment balance

Mercury uses partner-bank deposits; Revolut uses a prepaid-card bank programme; Wise, Airwallex and Payoneer are non-bank payment providers with distinct safeguarding or programme conditions.

Protection boundary

FDIC coverage follows the deposit chain, not the currency count.

Mercury's cited checking and savings are USD deposits at Choice Financial Group or Column N.A., with a conditional sweep path for eligible funds. Revolut's cited prepaid-card funds are transferred to Lead Bank or networked insured institutions. In both cases, actual coverage depends on beneficial ownership, records, account category, aggregation with the customer's other deposits at the same bank, programme timing and the FDIC's determination. A fintech screen or advertised programme limit cannot replace those conditions.

Wise ordinary balances are not FDIC insured; only eligible USD funds opted into its interest feature can enter the cited programme-bank path. Airwallex says eligible funds for some US customers are intended for pass-through coverage through an Evolve omnibus programme, which is not a blanket statement for every customer or currency. Payoneer does not present its receiving details and balances as bank deposits. Foreign-currency support does not create USD 250,000 of insurance per currency, detail or wallet.

Direct bank deposit

Mercury's eligible USD deposit follows the exact partner bank and sweep agreement.

Prepaid programme

Revolut coverage follows Lead Bank programme records and aggregation conditions.

Optional programme

Wise ordinary balances differ from eligible opted-in USD interest funds.

Non-bank balance

Airwallex and Payoneer require their exact custody or programme evidence.

Capability matrix

The number of supported currencies is not the number of local accounts.

Every currency needs its own holding, receiving, adding, conversion, spending and payout check.

Wise personal and business

Wise's US personal page documents holding 40 currencies and receiving details for 20 currencies, while its holding page says supported balances can be held without a holding fee. Conversion still has a currency-specific fee. USD details use different ACH, domestic-wire and Swift instructions, and the correct routing number, account type, partner-bank detail and currency must match the rail. Business onboarding, Nevada and territory restrictions remain separate.

Revolut personal

Revolut lists 25 currencies that can be opened, held and exchanged. A currency outside that list can still be spent or withdrawn through transaction-time conversion, which must not be counted as a held balance. The current evidence does not assign local receiving details to every listed holding currency. Plan, exchange, card, funding, transfer and programme-bank terms remain distinct.

Airwallex and Payoneer business

Airwallex advertises local Global Accounts in more than 20 currencies and a central wallet for holding and reusing supported balances. Payoneer documents receiving details for a defined currency set and balance conversion or withdrawal after eligible business receipts. Neither provider gives the customer a traditional foreign bank account merely because local details appear in the dashboard.

Receiving-detail sequence

Use the detail for its exact currency, rail and payer type.

A receiving detail can be restricted to domestic payments, named Swift payments, marketplaces, business clients or specific payer categories. Copy the current beneficiary name, routing or branch code, account number, account type, currency and reference from the authenticated provider screen. Do not reuse a screenshot after the provider changes a partner bank or detail, and do not send another currency merely because the account number format looks valid.

Before sharing details, confirm the customer's residence or business entity, verification, supported activity and ownership information. After the payer sends, preserve the payment reference and wait for the stated rail status. A pending intermediary or compliance review is not a request to resend. If a payment is rejected or returned, reconcile the original instruction and fees before attempting a corrected route.

  1. 01Select the exact balance and open its current receiving-detail screen.
  2. 02Match currency, domestic or Swift rail, beneficiary and payer eligibility.
  3. 03Copy every routing, account, branch and reference field without substitution.
  4. 04Review receiving, correspondent, conversion and return-fee disclosures.
  5. 05Track one instruction; do not duplicate a pending or reviewed payment.

Loading, stale, error and intermediary states

A pending correspondent bank is not an available wallet balance.

Preserve the transaction stage before choosing the next action.

Currency unavailable

If a currency or local detail is missing, treat it as unavailable for that customer. Check residence, personal versus business account, verification and live coverage. Do not infer support from a global currency list, a card network, another market or a prior screenshot.

Detail changed or stale

Partner banks, routing numbers and account details can change. Use the authenticated current detail for each payment. If a payer used an old detail, preserve the original instruction and wait for the provider's return or migration guidance rather than redirecting funds informally.

Intermediary fee or hold

Swift and international wires can involve correspondent or recipient banks that deduct fees, request information or delay credit. A provider's own displayed fee is not the guaranteed total deduction. Record sender, intermediary, recipient and conversion charges separately.

Wrong currency received

A USD detail may accept only USD even when the account holds other currencies. The payment can be rejected, returned or converted under separate rules. Do not assume the provider will open a balance automatically or that the original amount will return without bank charges.

Card conversion surprise

If the transaction currency is not held, a card can select another balance and convert at authorisation or settlement. Tips, offline transactions, reversals and delayed presentment can change the final amount. Check spending order and live balance rather than treating card acceptance as currency holding.

Account restricted or closed

A provider can restrict receiving, conversion, cards, transfers or withdrawals independently during verification, sanctions, fraud or terms review. Follow the exact notice and complaint channel. Do not conceal the business activity, payer or payment purpose to evade a restriction.

Decision walkthroughs

Six US multicurrency jobs produce different answers.

These scenarios classify product evidence; they are not tax, legal, treasury or investment advice.

Personal travel balances

Wise and Revolut both document personal holding, but compare supported balance currencies, adding methods, conversion fees, card spending order and protection. A large currency count is not a reason to pre-convert, and neither provider becomes a bank account in every held currency.

Freelancer receiving client payments

Wise or Payoneer may fit when the payer, activity, currency and receiving detail are eligible. Confirm whether personal or business use is required, what payer types are allowed, the exact local or Swift rail and how funds can be held, converted, spent or withdrawn afterward.

US business collecting global revenue

Airwallex has the clearest business Global Account and wallet chain in this set. Verify US entity onboarding, beneficial owners, each local detail, supported receipt sources, wallet currency, plan and protection. A collection detail is not a branch account owned directly by the business.

Marketplace seller

Payoneer documents marketplace and business receiving workflows, but availability remains account-specific. Use only the receiving detail approved for that platform and currency. Confirm pricing, conversion, balance payment, withdrawal and card eligibility before routing recurring revenue.

USD business account sending EUR

Mercury can convert a supported non-USD international wire from the USD account. That can be appropriate when holding EUR is unnecessary. The one-percent cited conversion fee, recipient details, intermediary deductions, compliance review and arrival remain separate from domestic USD banking.

Keeping operating cash protected

Start with the legal holder and programme rather than currency features. Compare Mercury partner-bank deposits, Revolut's Lead Bank programme, Wise's ordinary versus opted-in USD treatment, Airwallex's customer-specific Evolve path and Payoneer's non-bank balance. Monitor same-bank aggregation outside the app.

Approved evidence

Every currency claim keeps its capability and observation date.

Holding, details, rails, fees, partners and protection require launch-time and material-change reverification.
